Globally, the  German language  is spoken by about 100 million people of which nearly 80 million non-German speakers. It is the main language of approximately 90 million inhabitants (18%) of the European Union. Simultaneously, German is an official language in Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Belgium, while there are German-speaking residents in the Netherlands, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Lithuania.
